Hello!
In Westwood Music Class, students learn the ABCs, the Do-Re-Mis, and the 1-2-3s of music! Students build a strong musical foundation by learning the names of the notes on the staff, reading music using solfege (do-re-mi), and performing both simple and complex rhythms. They also enjoy engaging composer lessons and hands-on experiences with instruments, movement, dance, and dramatics.
Each grade level presents a musical program every year, as required by the State of Kansas. Every performance is offered twice—once during the school day and once in the evening—so all families can attend.
Mrs. Lucas holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Oklahoma State University and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of Oklahoma. She is also a National Board Certified Teacher. Mrs. Lucas taught high school choir for five years, middle school choir for ten years, and has taught elementary music since the fall of 2024.
Mrs. Lucas loves to sing and perform and has sung professionally, most notably with the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. She also loves musical theater, and her favorite role was playing The Witch in Into the Woods at Broadway RFD in Lindsborg in 2019. She is LETRS certified and plans to pursue ORFF certification in the coming years.
